Power System Monitor

The Power System Monitor is an instrument used to monitor generating plants and sub-stations. It is based on Digital Signal Processor (DSP) technology. This instrument monitors three phase voltages, three phase currents, generator field voltage, generator field current, valve position and steam pressure. These values, along with three phase power, are calculated, displayed and stored for future analysis. The PSM has been modified to add fault recording capability to the basic system. This involves continuously sampling voltage and current and storing them (and other calculated values) in memory. When a fault is detected, these values (both before and after the event) are down-loaded to a hard drive for permanent storage. These records can then be displayed and analysed to determine the source of the fault and how the system reacted to the fault conditions.
